TakItWithMe - Google™ Earth to GPS Help
How do I copy KML from Google Earth to TakItWithMe?
Copying is simple. You can right click over any placemark in the Google Earth map window and select 'Copy'.
Switch to the TakItWithMe KML converter page, right click over the KML form window and select 'Paste'.
To copy multiple points, lines, and polygons, group them into a single folder in your Google Earth
'Places' menu, select the folder by left clicking, then right click and select 'Copy'. Return
to TakItWithMe and right click 'Paste' into the KML form.
What I do after copying my KML into the KML form?
After copying your KML into the KML form, click 'Covert KML to GPX'. After a few seconds (depending on the size of the
KML and your network speed), two new buttons will appear - 'Send to Garmin' and 'Download GPX'. Use the 'Send to Garmin'
button to send the converted KML to a compatible Garmin GPS. See our Frequently
Asked Questions page for details on supported devices. The 'Download GPX' button allows you to download the converted
KML in GPX format for use with a wide range of GPS devices and software.
What do the Conversion Options Mean?
Google Earth KML can contain points, lines, and polygons. TakItWithMe provides options on how to use these in your GPS.
Point Options:
- To Waypoint: Creates a GPS Waypoint for each Point in your MyMap. The waypoint name and
description will be based on your MyMap to the limit of the GPS text field sizes (which isn't very big).
- To Route: Creates a Route by connecting the points in your MyMap in order of creation. The route name
is based on the name of your MyMap while individual route segments are named from your waypoints. This allows
you to create detailed route directions. Obviously, a route requires at least 2 points.
Line and Polygon Options:
- To Route: Creates a Route for each line/polygon in your MyMap. The route name is based on the name of the line
while the route segments are simply numbered in order.
- To Track: Creates a track (breadcrumb trail) for each line/polygon in your MyMap. Tracks are cannot be used to
actively navigate and do not show markers at intermediate points.
You may select any combination of conversion options. If you change your selections after loading your MyMap into
TakItWithMe, click on 'Load MyMap' again prior to saving to the GPS to reflect your changes.
What are the Limitations in the KML Converter?
The KML Converter will only search for placemarks within the top level Folder/Document of any pasted KML.
This covers most cases. We do not currently support converting MultiGeometry objects but will likely do so
in the future.
